Job description

Introduction

The main purpose of security at Supa-Store is to safeguard our staff and customers and to protect our merchandise, goods, property and physical assets from theft, robbery or any event that could lead to loss or damage.

To serve as a crime prevention mechanism that is highly visible on our premises to offer a reminder to criminals that a high level of security is being enforced to discourage criminal activities and to offer our customers peace of mind while shopping.

Duties & Responsibilities

Checking Merchandise
• Thoroughly inspect purchased merchandise against till slips at the check point.
• Identify irregularities in respect of merchandise and till slips and report these.
• At the store entrance/exit points to listen for the detector alarms that detect merchandise leaving the store that have not been paid for.
• Take actions to prevent theft of our merchandise including arrest and detention.

5.2 Searching
• Staff may only remove merchandise from the staff entry point where they can pay for the purchase at the till allocated for this.
• Thoroughly search staff bags and parcels when leaving the store from the staff exit turnstile.
• Small items of merchandise can be hidden on the body and removed from the store.
• Thoroughly search the body of staff exiting the store from the main entrance, liquor store entrance, goods receiving and dispatch gates and cages.

5.3 Alcohol Testing
• Staff entering the store for work must be breathalyzed on arrival for work to ensure that they are free from alcohol when entering the work area.
• Staff returning from lunch must be breathalyzed to ensure that they are free from alcohol when entering the work area.
• Straws are available for persons who don’t feel comfortable blowing directly into the device. For those who don’t mind straws are not mandatory.

Store Protocol

0.01 to 0.07 – allowed to work.

0.08 to 0.13 – you will be sent home and come back after 2 hours.

0.13 or more – disciplinary action (you will be tested twice by security and management).

5.4 Access Control
• Staff entry and exit points are fitted with biometric fingerprint identification devices.
• Staff will scan their fingerprint on arrival to work and on leaving the premises whether after work or during lunch time. Security must make sure that staff use their biometrics when entering or leaving the premises.
• The goods receiving/dispatching gate is an access-controlled point.
• Only deliveries and collections are permitted at this gate.
• Staff are not allowed to access or egress this area.
• The security officer will receive the delivery note from the truck driver and hand it over the receiving clerk.
• The receiving clerk will advise security to allow the truck to enter.
• The security officer will observe the delivery/loading/unloading to ensure there are no irregularities or collusion is happening.
• * Premises Patrols
• Day Patrols
• Armed officers will do hourly patrols of the entry points and interior and exterior parking areas.

• Night Patrols
• Armed security officers will do hourly night patrols of the premises using the electronic guard patrol system.
• Purpose of the patrols is to create visibility, identify criminal activity, identify safety and security risks (lights not working, leaking pipes, open doors).
• * Arrests
• Security officers are responsible for arresting Shoplifters, Thieves and Robbers.
• When a customer is caught with stolen merchandise the suspect will be arrested, the stolen item must be confiscated, a police case must be opened, and the person must be handed over to the police.
• Security officers are required to attend court proceedings as a witness relating to any arrest made.
• Where staff are caught stealing the staff member along with the stolen merchandise must be escorted to HR for further processing.
• * Visibility and Crime Prevention
• Security officers are deployed to create visibility, to prevent and detect theft, shoplifting and crime and to create a safe environment for our customers and staff.
• Security officers must always be visible, customers must see us and feel comfortable that they are safe.
• Security officers will be dressed neatly in uniform; behave professionally; treat customers and each other with dignity and respect and always be at their post.

Desired Experience & Qualification
• Grade 12
• Valid South African ID
• PSIRA registered, minimum Grade “C” accreditation
• Basic Fire Fighting
• Clear criminal record
